Making A Romantic Sitting Area...In The Garden

Oooooooooohhh yes...As long as I'm still breathing...I'm gonna be talking love and romance..neat and tidy...warm and fuzzy....And it's just about gardening time in Round Knob Canyon and I've had 2 emails this week asking gardening questions...One was where I order my seed from and the other was advice on what to plant for someone just starting a new garden...and she SAID...her mind is leaning in this direction for the first time in her married life...because of Bird's Eye View....now THAT is a COMPLIMENT.  :-)
She said that because of reading Bird's Eye View...she is much more aware of messes she makes and leaves laying for days and when she pulls up to her own home now from errands...she notices how much nicer her home looks on the outside..and she's giving some thought to putting a welcoming wreath on her front door and maybe even foo fooing her front porch...WOW!!!  She says she walks in the front door of her home and she is immediately looking around now...noticing just how it looks ..neat and tidy wise and wondering what others would think if THEY had just walked in her front door....WOW!!!  WOW!!!  WOW!!!  JUST GAVE ME GOOSE BUMPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now some of you may be thinking "I dont' give a RIP what others would think if they walked in MY front door"....Well you should!  And as far as decor...I don't either...We don't have one fancy or new stick of furniture or anything ANYWHERE in our home...in ANY room....AND I don't WANT anything new...because NEW doesnt' say homey, warm and fuzzy...and "I" like homey, warm and fuzzy....   :-)

Warm and homey to ME...says "There's a long history here and that history is full of stories .. some good and maybe some a little sad...but they all make up the big map of where this family has been all through our lives...and history and stories to 'me'....are priceless....

My new friend with all the questions and compliments says that she lives in the Washington State area and she's doing a lot of "firsts" this year, after finding my blog.  But she's a little worried about gardening in Washington State...But let me tell you something..and I told her the same thing in her reply...."Years ago...there were some WONDERFUL gardening shows on HGTV and they would tour this and that personal garden during their shows....and some of the most beautiful gardens we saw on that show...were in Washington State...so THAT is no big deal.....
I have Salvia planted in my cottage garden right now...because of a tour that program did in Seattle Washington...years ago...and the woman that owned that garden had a big 12 foot circle of Salvia and she said her circle grew out and out more each year and it was wonderful to add to bouquets...So the very next spring...we had a patch of Salvia started...It took years to get mine to DO much...because Billy thought it was a WEED and he kept pulling it OUT when we'd clean up the beds to plant each spring...gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr...Finally a couple of years ago...I said "I'm just sick my Salvia didn't take off in this spot...that was beautiful on HGTV...."  He said, "Oh was that a PLANT THERE?  I thought that was weeds and I've been pulling it UP every spring"   So yes...Billy DOES have faults...even though I make him sound like a dream boat...he's my dream boat...but he has as many faults as I do...just don't tell him...because he doesn't know that....hahaha

But first and foremost is a clean yard...and you need a neat and tidy and clean yard..even if you have 15 kids....In FACT...15 kids would be GOOD...because look at the free WORKERS you have..So don't let that be a liability...it's your ASSET..just train them well....
So just be planning your clean up...alone or with your spouse and or kids and first just clean up your yard to perfection...no tools laying around....bicycles and tricycles need their own parking spot in the back yard....along with little wagons and smaller toys...Everything needs to have a place and everything needs to be IN that place when not being used...

As for the wreath on the front door my friend is thinking about....I dont' even have a wreath on our front door....we have in the past..on and off...but we have so many deer and other wildlife running through and we like being able to see out...without anything in the way...so we have a very tidy front porch that seems very inviting to ME...but no wreath at this time...I may try to figure something out because a wreath really is..welcoming...

Plan your garden beds ...what size and where you want them...and then decide what you want...taller plants go in the back and on ends...smaller plants go in the front of the beds...

I lean towards only very old fashioned flowers/plants....I have tons of mints...zinnias, cosmos, hibiscus, hydrangeas...a few hollyhocks..several herbs...daylilies...ferns and other old fashioned things...AND although I like neat and tidy...I like my gardens to look like they belong to an old grandma and that they're 100 years old...so I LOVE overgrown gardens and lush and plush...Billy will come in the back door and say "You've got horse weeds 7 feet tall along your cottage garden fence"  And I'll say "Don't you TOUCH that....that's FILLER"  He'll say "Farmers pay a FORTUNE to have that taken out of their fields..."  And I'll say "Get me their address"  :8)

And I order all of our seed from www.AmericanMeadows.com and I usually order by the 1/2 pound and pound....there are a few things I only order 1/4 pound of...but I OVERplant my annuals because I plant in so many places and Billy won't let me TILL all those places...so I rake the ground to loosen it and throw the seed down and sprinkle it with my sprinkler cans and then I pray to beat the band....because some of my garden beds are 1/4 mile from the house and the garden hose... :-0

The best old fashioned plants "I" know of for scent ... are Swiss Mint...Mint Julieup, Sweet Annie...and I plant all of those around the kitchen window and front and back doors...so when we have a breeze or rain...the scent just gets right up and comes right in the house....or if you walk by those spots you get a whiff of their scents too...
We were having a back porch cook out one night with the geezers and one of the old geezer men asked "What is that sweet scent...I LOVE that" and it was breezy that night and it was my sweet annie and mints that I have planted around the back porch....then everybody wanted some so I sent things home with them...

AND you can't have a garden...without a romantic setting area...and I have 2 small tables with 2 chairs on our porch year round....and this year I'm going to enhance them...and I'll try to remember to have Kim take some pics and post them when I'm done...so get out and do some junking AFTER YOU CLEAN YOUR PORCH and yard...and fix you a little 'dinner area for 2' in your cottage garden or on your back porch....

I also order just a little from Park Seed and Wildseed Farms...and they're both online too....but I order most of my seed from American Meadows and it's reasonable for what you're getting...just really good seed with great germination....

I'm late so I'd better get off here....I'm posting a pic below of a cozy setting area....don't we wish we all had THIS?  AND I'm going to see what I can do about making us a spot just like this....I'm sure Billy will be thrilled....hahahahaha

Peace and love and thanks so SO much..for stopping by...This has been a bird's eye view of the katydid and until next time...you are loved....

I'm just trying to think...what I could do on our back porch to make this exact scene.  I'd need one of those cheap trellis's from Lowe's and it would need to be stained and artificial vines weaved through it.....and I've already got the perfect table and chairs and I LOVE fruit jars with candles for lighting...so I"M ON THIS!!!  How about you?
