The Busy Woman's Survival Guide

The Busy Woman's Survival Guide...that's a book I found when I was cleaning a closet earlier this week.  I remember buying it at a yard sale last summer and it was still in my tote bag...And do you know WHY it was still in my tote bag?  Because I AM ONE BUSY WOMAN!!!  And I just forgot to empty my tote bag when I came from the yard sale...

We've all heard the saying "If you want to get something done...ask a busy person to do it" and that's the way I felt this week....working with Kim on designing a jungle theme for our bible school.  It would have gone SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much smoother if I had had more than a 7 day notice....  :-/  But it turned out really nice......

But I'm sure I hung that book bag on that closet door in the utility room thinking I'd go through it later and get my little books out that I had so lovingly bought for 50 cents each...and sit down with a big ice cold Coca Cola and skim those books to my little old hearts content...Maybe even take notes and highlight important lines or paragraphs and write in the margins of my books...I LOVE to do that...make notes to myself or for someone ELSE that may come along someday and find that old book that had belonged to 'me' so many years ago....

But I know exactly what happened to that idea...I'm sure the geezer went back into that utility room and saw that that bag had been hanging on that door knob for a month of Sundays and I'm sure he came to me and said "WHEN are you going to DO SOMETHING with that BAG hanging on that door knob?  So .... always wanting to be the perfect little wife with the blissfully happy husband ...living a storybook life in the land of LaLa.......I'm sure I trotted right back to the utility room and grabbed that bag and hung it on a hanger in that closet...and that was the end of my recollection of that bag or those books or even having had the time and the privilege of GOING to a yard sale last summer....

I've had that book laid out on my desk for 4 days now...thinking I'd have time to read or at least skim it and see just what the answer IS for a 'busy woman' to find some time for fun and games and just savoring moments.  But here it still sits.
I saw it when I set down to my computer this morning so I thought..."You know Katy...I think we should talk about this BOOK today!  I don't have TIME to READ it...but I'll just skim the contents page and see what it would tell me about if I had the TIME to read it.

I was down at church working this week...I have NO idea how many hours I've been down there this week.  For one thing the place had to be cleaned like crazy before I could even begin to decorate.  AND even at that...I was so rushed for time...I had to do a half baked job...I'll do more later.... But that's no longer my responsibility...we have clean TEAMS now  :-)  But I think I'm going to start being the 'ghost cleaner'...and come in behind all of them as often as I can...and really clean...There is just no reason for boxes and sacks and stuff to be sitting in nooks and crannies....There's a place for everything and everything needs to BE...in that PLACE.........

I remember in 2008 I believe it was...we were having the yearly associational meeting at our church in August of that summer...and a lady came up to me in the kitchen and said "Do you mind telling me who cleans your church?"  I said "Well "I" do...why do you ask...have you found some DIRT?"  :-)   She said "OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOO...quite the contrary"  She said "We're in every church in the association for these meetings and I'll have to tell you...this is without a doubt the cleanest church we've ever been in"   I was SO SO thrilled....I just wanted to yell...................YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!  AND IT LOOKS THIS WAY ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL THE TIME!!!    She said "My GOODNESS...this is a big church...do you do the cleaning all alone?"  I said "Yup...if I get in a real bind I call on Shannon if I'm down to the wire or someone is sick and I can't get to it...but that's rare...I'm here sometime between Wednesday night and Sunday morning cleaning and scrubbing...52 weeks a year...."  I've had deputies and one State Trooper stop at the church on different occasions because I'd be there at 9pm and they'd stop to make sure I was ok....   I was ok until they knocked on the DOOR at 9pm......absolutely scared the GOOINS" out of me......So seeeeeeeeeeeeeee Bonnie....I'm not brave....I'm just a control freak ...I had a job that needed done and that was the hour I was able to get TO it....      :-)

But back to my book...Let's skim this book together real quick and maybe it will help many of us...how bout it?

Chapter 1:  Manage Others' Expectations.....It says to know what the expectations of others are and try to do a job right the first time...so you don't have to do it over later....to be sure they are pleased....Well now...on THAT....I have higher expectations than most people...I've often called a control freak...and the geezer gave me that personality trait.  I don't like litter...I don't like layers of dust...I don't like dirty windows or rumpled window curtains....I don't like dirty dishes in the sink...I don't like this and I don't like that...and I FOR SURE don't like a job half done.  I like neat and tidy and organized....I don't always pull that off to perfection....Ok now the geezer is reading this and laughing until he may need resuscitated.....but I AM ALWAYS WORKING AT SOMETHING....So chapter #1 is NOT my problem....

Chapter 2:  A Little Padding Never Hurt Anyone...That one says to pad your days and projects with plenty of TIME...giving yourself an extra cushion of comfort to get something done and done right.  Well now how do you DO that....when you have forty eleven things to get done before NOON so you can do another umpteen dozen after lunch....My days are rush rush rush..ALL of them....The geezer just told me this last week...."I have GOT to get you to Gatlinburg so you can have a couple days of just savoring life"  Ok now did you catch that in that line?  He said a COUPLE OF DAYS...because WE don't even have time to throw caution to the wind and be gone a week these days...But I think Kev will at least have what he is calling "Graffice Summer Camp" or something like that...set up within a week...and that's just temporary beds and a temporary living room set up in his flooded home...to make do until the repairs are all done.....there's gonna be WAY too much dirt and dust to put the furniture back in soon...so he's going to build a 'summer camp'....ooooohhh geezzzz but then at LEAST I'll know he has a place to sleep besides his office chair and I'll feel we can go off for a few days of fun and frolic unless something ELSE happens.....shall we pray...

Chapter 3:  Learn To Say No....Ok now "NO!"  What is that word.....what ARE those 2 letters of the alphabet doing stuck together like they're a team and like they mean something good and meaningful......NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?   How can a NO help ANYONE?  That's what I"D like to know....If someone is needing a job done and you're the only one that can DO it....can you really say........................NO?  ggggrrrrrrrrr  I'm beginning to think a stupid person with a lot of free time....wrote this stupid book...AND I PAID 50 CENTS FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chapter 4:  Build Solid Time Blocks and Limit Interruptions....Do you know when I check my messages on facebook?  It's when the phone rings and I have to come to the desk  :-/  Which is several times a day now because even though we're on that no call list....they're calling ANYWAY...and I have to at least come and check caller ID to see who it IS....Other than that...I don't have many interruptions...just too much packed into every single day....

Let's skip to Chapter 7....because 5 and 6 talk about letting your family all do their own stuff and it tells us not to pamper them...and that isn't going to happen in Round Knob Canyon....I was born to love and pamper....and I will continue to do so.....so POOP on Chapter 5 and 6..

Chapter 7:  Brushing Your Teeth Isn't Fun....It says that brushing our teeth isn't fun...but we schedule that at least twice a day because it's necessary and we just have to schedule fun time TOO....
Well we try to DO that...we hope to go to Kountry Kitchen for Oysters this weekend...the geezer has lost 13 pounds since his diabetic diagnosis and we are healing that naturally without meds and I've lost 7 pounds doing the healthy eating program WITH him....but he's a big eater and he deserves a treat...We hope to go to the McCracken County Fair...just because I LOVE an old county fair and I just like to go over there and walk around and savor the memories of yesteryear at our own county fair in the 1950's and 60's...and we hope to go to our local Barbecue and Craft Show at Fort Massac at some point tomorrow...we have a family member entering the barbecue contest...so this will be extra fun....AND we plan to head to Cobden today to get blueberries....SO we DO make plans....but we always feel rushed to get back and do a 'chore'.....

Chapter 8:  First Things First...It's All About Priorities...Now I DO ... do this!  I make a list every single day and I prioritize....I put what MUST be done at the top and I list even THAT in the order or importance...and I stick to it as closely as possible.....But I always have WAY too much list left over...at the end of my day......

Oh we could go on and on with this book if we had the TIME.....It goes on to say..."Make lists...."Seek Support" hahahahaha  It's my SUPPORTERS that slow me DOWN....hahaha   Oh and it goes on and on.....But I've got to do my dailies....I'd LOVE to go in to yard sales before we head to Cobden for berries...but the geezer will probably say "Now THIS is the day we've put aside for BLUEBERRIES...let's not get sidetracked right off the bat..."  gggggrrrrrrrrrr

He was telling me towards the end of this past week I was spending too much time decorating for VBS and no one appreciates anything....he said "You've been down there almost EVERY DAY for a WEEK"  I said "Oooops...sorry I didn't catch that...I was thinking of Bow Season and you hunting for 9 hours a day for 3 months....now WHAT WAS that again that you were just saying?"  hahahahaha   He didn't really mind...he knows I love love LOVE doing things like I did this week....AND I love cleaning down there and plan to do more of it...'ghost' backup cleaning  :-)   Kim had an early morning appointment with Evan today so we'll post the pics of our bible school jungle decorations tomorrow....ok?

And listen gang....when you send emails from the other side of the world....would you please translate them into English before you send them.  Kim stays as swamped as I do and she isn't always available to translate them for me....I WANT to hear from you.....but me don't speaka nuttin' but English....and on emails...please put "Your Blog" on the subject line.....thanks

Peace and love from the canyon....I love you all gobs and gobs.....this has been a bird's eye view of the katydid and until next time...you are loved
