The Comer Kids On Making Money

The Comer Kids On Making Money

I don't know about your kids...but all 3 of ours came into this world with their hand out and trying figure out a way to make BIG money.   If they were not asking for a hand out free and clear...they were trying to negotiate an easy job for big pay.

Over the years....they tried it all.  They've had their own yard sales and parted with lifelong treasures for mere pennies.  Set up Koolaid stands and then bombed out on the sugar-ladened drink when they realized Koolaid Stands are not the going thing in the country.
Kevin even sold Pet Ghosts at school.  He just took some brown lunch bags....wrote names on them and folded the top down and took them to school and sold them as pet ghosts....telling the kids not to open the bags until they got home because the pet

ghost would get out in the wrong place.  I got called to the principals office on that one.....Well....truth be told...I was called to the principals office on MANY occasions....Our kids were never really bad kids EVER...but they were sure full of their little goofy pranks...and Kevin was the biggest authority on pranks by far and for sure....

When it was time for Kev's high school graduation...I was called to the principals office and told that Kevin had been offered $400 to fake a seizure during his graduation...and HE was going to DO it.
I assured the principal he would NOT have a seizure IF IN FACT...he lived to even GRADUATE....and I went straight to Kev's classroom...called him out into the hall and grabbed hold of his right ear....and I said "DO YOU FEEL THIS EAR?"  He looked so shocked and said "Well of course I do, mom...what are YOU doing here?"  I said "IF YOU WANT THIS EAR....TO REMAIN...ATTACHED TO YOUR HEAD....YOU WILL NOOOOOOOOOOOT FAKE A SEIZURE DURING GRADUATION OR ANY OTHER TIME...DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?"  He said "Yes ma'am"   Graduation went through just as smooth as silk...and I didn't even have to tell his dad......SURPRISE GEEZER....You think you've had it so rough with these rascals...YOU KNOW NOTHING...DO YOU HEAR ME ....NOOOOOOOOOOOTHING....hahaha

And then one day in about 1980...Kevin climbed in the car at school...beaming with the announcement that he had taken orders for 42 quarts of strawberries...for the next day...and the patch was already closed.  He had been helping ME pick strawberries at a strawberry farm that used to be just next door and I guess he had a 'light bulb moment' during our picking the day before'....
I had a hard time on that one...trying to convince him that 42 quarts of berries...packaged to deliver .... would wreck havoc in even the most organized kitchen and I was sorry but he was going to have to go back to school and tell the folks that his strawberry business had already bit the dust....HE WAS DEVASTATED...

But I guess the job that the geezer and I got the most enjoyment out of when the kids were young...was the summer Kevin saw an ad on television about an institute near St Louis that paid people to catch lightning bugs.  The ad said they would pay one penny for each firefly and they would send containers for storage and shipping.  The filled contained had to remain in the frig until ready to ship  :-/
He immediately took charge of this new business venture with his little brother and sister and they had a meeting to decide what they would spend their big income on.  They considered an in-ground pool or possibly a lighted tennis court to ride their bicycles and tricycles and big wheels on...The containers came...and the business opened up that night in Round Knob Canyon with dad and I watching from the porch swing.
We'd sit and laugh each evening as the kids would run through the yard catching lightning bugs and putting them in their professional housing containers...and we'd hear them yell as they'd catch a lightning bug....ONE DOLLAR AND FIFTY TWO CENTS......and another one would yell "ONE DOLLAR AND FIFTY THREE CENTS" and on and on and on.....They ended up settling for bubble gum and a big stack of Hershey bars and some popcorn...when they finally earned only $6.72.  But it made for a heavenly summer full of priceless memories....

I remember one day the geezer and I were working around the house...The geezer had always worked swing shift...so he happened to be home and up that day and working in his workshop....And the phone rang and it was a teacher from Jefferson School...And I don't remember who's teacher it was at the time....but recounting all these stories....I can safely say...it was probably Kevin's  :-)  But she said "I'd like to ask a question and if you don't want to tell me it's ok...I'm just curious"  And I said "No it's ok...what is it?"  She said "Is it true your kids get $45 a week allowance?"  hahahahaha   I said "NOOO...but that SOUNDS like something one of them would TELL"
I guess that day in class ... somebody had a big story for Show and Tell....and one of our rascals had to outdo their story....

And then there was their variety shows one summer....And the geezer had a jon boat  which they turned upside down and used for a stage....and they'd set lawn chairs in the back yard for their 'audience' and invite the grandparents out and we'd all set in those lawn chairs and watch their variety show...Our Kids would have ALL 3 made GREAT additions to The Little Rascals Gang.....

You know...re-counting these stories...I just realized that Kevin would make a good blog story all by himself....and he won't mind...as long as he doesn't know  :-)  We'll call it "Life With Kevin" and it will be coming up soon...and I'll tell you about the day he went missing and because of the circumstances we feared he had been kidnapped or even worse...and we had to call police...and oh geeeeeeeeeeezzz there were so many stories with Kevin...I could literally write a book....

I don't know how your kids are or were when they were small....but when ours were small...you could rattle a pocket full of change and they'd follow you anywhere.   :-)

This has been a bird's eye view of the katydid and until next time...you are loved......

Isn't this beautiful....absolutely beautiful.  This could easily be a photo from my Secret Garden...but it isn't.   Some nights we have so many lightning bugs in the canyon...it almost lights UP the canyon  :-)  I LOVE lightning bugs!!!
