Here's My Wreck Story...by The Katydid

OooooooK...I've got it down to a science NOW...So here's what you do if you need to lose a little weight.  First you get your son to make sure he's in the 2013 Heartland Flood in Paducah, Ky and you work 10 to 12 hours a day on flood recovery and relief.  THEN if you haven't lost enough...you just find a way to break your leg so you can't get to the refrigerator and chug down the milk 4 or 5 times a day...and walla...weight just falls off of you.

Soooooo here's what happened.  I came in from church on Sunday morning...zipping in the door like lightning...just like every Sunday...to grab my jeans and put on my tennis shoes and head back out the door to meet our geezer gang to go ride to lunch...have an afternoon ride and be back at church that evening....but on this particular Sunday...for some reason...I had forgotten to wash my shoe laces and many of you know how I am about dirty shoes and shoe laces.....So I just grabbed my riding boots which I hadn't worn in about 2 years...I laced them up and we were on our way.

We got to Fort Massac and one of the geezers said he had heard of a fantastic little diner...Burger Nook...in Herrin, Ill and he'd like to try that if no one had a better idea....so off to Burger Nook we went.
We were a little leary when we pulled up because it didn't look that great...but honestly...we've had some of our best 'dinner out meals'...in little places just like this so we went on in.....

The menu was the pits...most of us ordered a hamburger or cheeseburger....we were half way through our lunch when the geezer that recommended the diner...found a half eaten rubber band in his hambuger...so we all pushed our plates back and just left.....

We had just gone down the back side of Carterville...I think it was...and Billy and I were just talking about their stop signs there around the school....Their schools were state of the art and the grounds were immaculate.  The stop signs were lighted around them and it was just really nice.

We went only a short distance on that kinda country road and we came to a stop sign....we stopped...we were the 3rd bike....all was going great...but when 'we' pulled out...a car was coming from our left at a much faster clip than it appeared and it was looking like he may hit us...so the geezer swerved and when he did...we hit a chug hole in the road that bounced us off the side of the road.  Now that would have been fine...we were not going very fast and the geezer could have got us back on the road just fine...but they had had heavy rains and we started sliding in the mud.    He was seconds from having us stopped...and we're not sure what happened...but something just took the bike down in an instant....we didn't crash....he just had to lay it on down...but in the ordeal...just like I'm so proned to DO...when I saw we were in trouble...I was trying to put my left foot down to help HIM hold us UP and I got my foot tangled in HIS foot and then my foot just went under my food rest and I felt the pop and it was horrific....

The geezer got the bike down and asked me if I was ok...and I said "I think I broke my leg or foot.  We looked and sure enough it was pointing to the left bigtime....Gerald was behind us and immediately got to us....he radioed Bob and Kenny who didn't even know it had happened and they came back....My foot was hurting so bad I was afraid to let them lay me down on the ground so the geezer just help up the bike until the ambulance got there...which took about 20-30 minutes.....

They said, "Yup...she's broke...they took my BP and did couple other things and asked me if I wanted to go to Marion or Carbondale and one whispered and said "Say Carbondale"  :-)  I said "Do I have the option of Lourdes in Paducah?"  They said "Not from here...maybe from the hospital but we have to take you local first for evaluation"

Ginger rode with me in the ambulance while the geezers and Judy got the bike up and we all headed to Carbondale hospital.

From there....I can't remember everything...the pain was so great and I didn't want pain meds at a hospital I wasn't familiar with.  So we waited on that.
They did xrays and said it was broken in 3 places and I'd need surgery but they'd prep me immediately and we'd get'er done.  I said "Noooooooooo I don't want surgery here...I need to be in Lourdes"  We discussed the options of getting me there....I said "If you can help the geezer get me on that bike and if it's ok for my leg to hang down for an hour...HE can take me to Lourdes and someone will be there to help get me off and inside"

We decided Kenny would ride our bike to our house and get our car and come back and then ride his bike back to Metropolis.   So the geezer took me to Lourdes in my own squad car.

I can't remember a lot about Lourdes...the geezer was in complete control without my opinions...because they insisted on pain meds and I was loopy after that.....we did more xrays...talked about surgery but when they polked me to do an IV...I squirted everybody in the room with my blood from that little prick...so they knew my blood was way too thin for surgery that night...My leg had also swollen to the size of an elephants leg  :-/

I was sedated and Dr Romaine set my leg to hold me till surgery and take off some of the pressure.  He told Billy I was one tough little squirt  :-)  .. I already knew that and so did the geezer   :-)

We got home about 4am...and had to be back at 9:30 to discuss when we could do the surgery and Dr Romain....who Kim lovingly named Dr Lettuce   :-)   said we need to wait a week to be safe....

We've spent this week with me on the love seat and the geezer on the couch....I am so SO overwhelmed that he is sleeping on the couch for me....he is so picky about his bed....but we're doing fine....

I have to stay down with my leg propped until surgery but so far...so good...

I'm having trouble with my sugar dropping more often for some reason...and I'm going to have to get off now...because I feel its going to drop again in a big....

The response has been beyond overwhelming for me....we have had so many phone calls every single day....The geezer just said yesterday "All of these years you've been Billy Comer's wife...and now I'm Kay Comer's husband"  because people will call and say "Is this Kay Comer's husband?"  :-)

We've had meals brought every single day and sometimes 2 meals a day...and listen folks ...to you locals...we really appreciate that...but we're doing fine, really...The geezer can cook for us and open soup or whatever till we get back to kinda normal...we've had sandwiches brought...whole meals...cakes...barbecue....oh my goodness...cookies and chili, lasagna...just all kinds of things...and I've been getting cards on facebook and email and snail mail....even flowers...and I know I'm forgetting some....but I have to get back down....

Kim is going to have to keep you updated for a few more days...but we're not going to run this into the ground.....While I was sitting in the car in Walmart yesterday waiting on the geezer to shop...I wrote a good uplifting blog for you...So we'll be back to normal just as soon as we can....

OH one miracle was....that I put my boots on that day...I hadn't worn those boots in 2 years....if I had put on my tennis shoes...the bone may have gone through the skin...because one break was a clean and total break......so seeeeeeee miracles DO HAPPEN...for those who believe....

I've got to get down...I know I'm forgetting things I wanted to tell you...but we'll get to it later...
I love you all gobs...and thanks so much for stopping by.....

The geezer is cleaning out my closets and alphabetizing my cabinets, closets and drawers and guess what?  He just threw away this maroon top yesterday that I have on in this pic....hahahahaha  AND I still wore it often....This is the day we bought our very first motorcycle after the kids were grown in 1997...Billy grew up with motorcycles since his dad owned a motorcycle shop...but put them on the back burner until we had the family up and on their own...See his laugh...he's almost famous for this laugh...he is the jolliest and friendliest old geezer...I am sooooooooooo blessed....
