What is Your Favorite Season?

It's beginning to look and feel a lot like fall in the canyon...and fall used to be my very favorite season.
Even when I was a little girl...sitting at my desk at Clark School...and back in the 1950's...we didn't have all kinds of expensive electronic gadgets to play with as kids...and I can remember mom and daddy would take us to Fort Massac often...to run and play on the swings and we'd go down by the river and throw rocks in...OH myyyyyyyyyyy how I loved throwing rocks in the river...still DO!

We missed Reelfoot Lake Craft show for some reason last fall...can't remember why...but the fall before last we were down there and we had to park a little ways down the road from the village and on the way TO the village...we had to walk across a bridge that had a rushing creek below.  And I stopped and picked up some rocks and started throwing them in the creek...and I threw and threw and threw...and geezer had stopped to wait on me...and finally he said "WE could have done THAT at Fort Massac...are we going up to this craft show or not?"  :-/   So I threw a couple more and we were on our way....But gads...I don't know what it is about a few simple things like that...but they just give me great joy.

But I've always loved fall through my own child hood and that of our kids....But now...I think Spring is my favorite....Fall brings so many disappointments for me.  The riffs in all of the families make it so sad...AND so hard...especially through the holidays...which used to be my VERY favorite times of the year...because I love planning and cooking and giving and doing....But now mom and daddy are gone...Billy's dad's been gone for 33 years and Billy's mom is lost in her own world now ...and when she's coherent...she can't hear...or says she can't  :-)

But in the spring...after a long and isolated winter...stuck in the house because I just can't stand getting out and about in bitter cold except for church and the grocery and on just a couple of other rare occasions...I'm soooooooo ready when the little green buds start coming out on the trees and my little perennials start peeking out of the ground saying "Hiddy doooooooooooo"  And I start planning my cutting gardens and my new herb beds and planting and dividing and this and that...collecting new bird houses to replace the ones that have slowly croaked through the years...And I start frillying up the porch and putting my candle jars out here and there and fixing my weed bouquets around the porch and under the Uncle Remus Tree....Ooooooooooooh my goodness...After these weeks of being laid up with a broken leg...I could sure use a couple of weeks of  "spring".....But I guess I'll dive head first and full steam into fall...when the cast comes off and I can walk again....

Spring in Round Knob Canyon is a very, very busy time and we work from sun up until sun down many, many days...and we love every minute of it. It's the time of year when I feel filled with the most love...and really...we should be bursting with love all year long...But in the spring...I'm always so filled with love and energy...I don't even 'notice' if folks don't seem to love me back...I adore them anyway and in MY head the world is full of sunshine, lollipops and rainbows...

Then comes Summer...and when I was a little girl...Summer was another of my favorite seasons...We were out of school for weeks on end...there was the county fair....and picking up the little yellow ducks to see what number was on the bottom to see what I had won...and buying the little brown monkey on the stick...and if you were born after 1955 you don't even know what a brown monkey on a stick IS...We'd go fishing with cane poles and fishing worms..still one my very favorite things to do...we'd have big family picnics with aunts and uncles and grandma's and cousins out the wazoo...it was a wonderful season when I was growing up....
Now days...in Round Knob Canyon...Summer means kind of a laid back season...but we eat out more with the geezers...and take long rides on the Valkyrie...we try to get in a couple of weekend trips to the races and a little vacation when we can work it in...and since 1997 I think we've only missed 2 of the 2 races each year we go to each summer in Springfield, Ill. And one of those was just this month right after I broke my leg...But even though summer is a fun season...it isn't my favorite...

Soooooo we ease through summer and then comes Fall...if we're going through them in order now....Aaaahhhh Fall...Fall is the season you cherish if you have a lot of Pilgrim blood in ya...like I do...It's the time we start stocking up for the long cold winter. We stack the porch with enough firewood to get us through the cold months...I get in emergency supplies for us and make sure the kids have done the same thing in their own homes...usually taking them a Bad Days Box...just so I can be sure...And a Bad Days Box is just a box to have on hand for emergencies...Batteries, candles, matches, flashlights, water, pop top cans of food for when the power is out...like beans and weiners and vienna sausages and crackers, bottled water and plastic spoons and forks. It's nothing you'd stand in line to have...if you didn't think you really needed them...but that box looks awfully good when the power DOES go out and stays out for 3-4 days in an ice storm....

In the fall I like to really give the house a good going over...I don't buy new and it's nothing you'd notice if you wasn't really looking...but I just like to get a little more prepared to hunker down for the winter...Get the cobwebs down to make room for new ones to form...  Wash the windows...I LOVE CLEAN WINDOWS...and wash the curtains...Fall is just a really REALLY...fun and exciting time for me...normally...in spite of the holidays that are thrown in so close together...

But Fall is also when the leaves start to change colors and fall to the ground. There's just a different smell in the air...and it's time to go hunt hickory nuts and pecans and plod through the woods looking for deer trails and find places for geezer's  tree stands..if he hasn't already made up his mind.

Fall is geezer's favorite time of the year by a long shot...because he's an OBSESSED BOW HUNTER...  And he goes at least once a day...and usually twice...but he loves to hunt and it's in the Fall that he's his most jolly...if there IS a most jolly for him...because he's pretty 'jolly' 24/7. And he has 26 trophy buck mounts hanging in our home...now that may sound tacky to you...but our home is a mix of an old hunters cabin and shabby chic...and we've designed it to where it just works perfect...and we were even on a home tour..years ago...

Fall is when we have my 2 favorite holidays...Halloween and Thanksgiving...And it's the time of all of my most fond memories...Dressing the kids as hobo's and old men and women and taking them trick or treating in town to the homes of family and friends...Carving Jack-O-Lanterns...and until just the last few years...I'd start carving jack-o-lanterns the first week of October and I'd carve one about every 5-6 days and have one setting with a lighted candle in it on the corner of the fireplace...all month long....I LOVE the smell of a burning candle in a jack-o-lantern...We have a tradition now that the kids are grown of having a fall festival in the canyon and I buy big pumpkins for everybody that says they're coming and we carve jack o lanterns and have chili and roast hot dogs down at the fire pit....SUCH great fun....makes for great memories...

And it's the time for punkin and pecan pies...and Thanksgiving dinner...OH how I've always loved Thanksgiving...As a little girl I loved EATING Thanksgiving dinner...and now as a great grandma...I LOVE to COOK Thanksgiving dinner.....But as soon as
Thanksgiving is past...comes my least favorite time of the year...Winter and The Christmas season....Now I could handle winter ok...I love to hibernate...it just seems so cozy...being stuck in here with the geezer...and I'm SURE he feels the very same way.   :8)  But Christmas has been a depressing time for me since mom passed away...because it was her favorite time of year...so after Thanksgiving...I've got my nose to the grindstone and I'm heading full steam ahead...to December 26th....my very favorite day of the year.....

Well....I've told you waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than you ever wanted to know about me and my seasons of the year....So what's YOUR favorite season of the year...and why?

We'll meet back here in the morning...same time...same station...if the good Lord's willing....and we'll either tell a story or solve some of the world's biggest problems...or we'll do SOMETHING....

Peace and Love from the canyon...I love you all gobs and gobs...thanks for stopping by

This scene reminds me of the Smoky Mountain streams.....Geezer says when I can walk we'll go to the Smokies for a few days if I want to....but right now...I'm not even crazy about riding in a CAR EITHER....   :-/   So we'll have to see....LOVE LOVE LOVE scenes like that....
