It’s just a “blog for fun” today – on this Mother’s Day Weekend – because I wanted to tell you a little bit about “The Comer Kids Club of Round Knob Canyon” – so we’re “looking back on motherhood on this Mother’s Day weekend –
In the 70’s and on thru to the late 80’s, this was 3 of the most creative and mischievous little rascals in Massac County. You can probably see that just by looking at the photo.
Brian (far left) and Kevin (far right) look like they’re trying to look so innocent like nothing in the world is up with them. Kim (in the middle) is looking very guilty and like she’s thinking “YES we did it and you’ll know WHAT we did – when WE are ready to TELL you” lol
There was never a dull minute in Round Knob Canyon. In the summer they’d turn their dads Jon boat upside down and make it a stage and put on variety shows in the backyard for us and the grandparents.
They ALWAYS had tons of company and usually when we went somewhere – there was 6 kids instead of 3 – because they always had friends with them.
Let me introduce you to the ‘grown up’ Comer Kids. That’s Brian on the left – Kim in the middle and Kevin on the right! And now let me tell you just a little bit about each one.
Kevin – Our Oldest
Kev is our family Einstein. He has an IQ ranked among some of the highest in the country – and I truly believe he was meant for super great things. But along with a high IQ – sometimes comes stubbornness out the wazoo – and boy does he have a stubborn streak 🙂
But he had his own TV show at the local college when he was 17 – and went on to do many great and exciting things. He was and is – also – our family prankster and is always ready with a monologue if you’ll just give him a minute of your time.
He asked to have a slumber party on the porch one summer night in his teens and of course we said “yes” not thinking we had to set rules with OUR kids … and 17 teenage boys showed up to spend the night. What a night that was –
Kevin has worked as a valet for Donald Trump at his Palm Springs Resort and has said many times that Trump was the kindest and most caring person you’d ever want to meet and that he was that way with every one. Kev said he would come through and talk to the bell hops and valets and other ‘everyday employees’ with just as much attention and grace as he did the big wigs.
He’s also worked as personal assistant to Russian royalty in Palm Springs, Florida – and when he was growing up – he kept us on our toes. I spent almost as much time in the principals office as he did in school – and not because he was mean or unruly – Heaven’s no – it was because he was a big prankster.
Kevin is also as kind and caring of a person as you’d ever want to meet – If he has a dime – you have a nickle if you need it – and that’s not an exaggeration. He’ll even give you the whole dime if you need it.
But he believes there is one way of doing anything – and it’s Kevin’s way … He’s had a rough last few years with the Paducah floods and his resulting health – I’d LOVE for this to be his year to really shine again. I’m still patiently waiting and that’s my daily and very earnest prayer –
Brian – Our Middle Son
Brian was and is our great American hunter and trapper. Brian is kind of a homesteader and they virtually live off the land. I absolutely LOVE their home and lifestyle! It and their old time ways are so much like ‘a step back in time.’
Brian was the only one of the 3 that we never had to worry about – because he was always hunting in the woods around our home – building something – or drawing. He can draw anything and make it look real.
Brian went to check his traps one morning before school and ran into trouble with a Skunk…and OH my Lordy …
Brian is an ordained Baptist preacher and missionary to La Isla Mexico – but the last couple years – he’s had to curtail his visits to Mexico – to be close to home to help Ben. But he still takes supplies to them when they really need them – in a van packed so full you couldn’t get another piece of paper in it 🙂 and he’s down there and back before you hardly know he’s gone.
He is one of the kindest and most caring people – you could ever hope to meet and it doesn’t matter how much he has going on in his own life – if you need him – he’s going to be there if there’s any way in the world he can make it happen.
Kim – Our Baby Girl
And KIM? Most of you know Kim and kinda know what makes her tick – even though she’s a very private person.
Kim does NOT like me telling stories about her – and even though our blog started out as ‘my blog’ – it is now “Kim’s blog” – run by Kim – and she’s turned it into a growing business – and NOW – “I” work for KIM … lol Kim is SO brilliant – that if she was organized – she would be dangerous … lol
Kim is a very down to earth and realistic type of person. Where the boys and I are so quick to help someone in need – Kim looks at it like “If you need a quarter – get a job” 🙂 Now she’ll HELP you if you need help – and in a heart beat if she really feels you need it. But you’re probably going to get a good lecture along with the help … lol I’m bad about that too –
Kim came home from school her first day in Kindergarten with a black eye and she had knocked a tooth out of the boy that hit HER … she’s been able to hold her own ever since.
Kim is a hard worker like you would not believe. I don’t even know anyone that works harder than Kim does. And she’s worse than me about putting herself on the back burner and putting others or other things first.
And while she’s stern and matter of fact on everything – she’s also one of the sweetest and most loving people you could ever hope to meet. Even when she was so bad in the hospital earlier this month – during the times she was able to communicate – it was always “Oh honey thank you” or “Sweetheart – this or that” – to the nurses.
Being mom to The Comer Kids has absolutely been the thrill of my life! And I’m still pretty doggone crazy about their dad too
When I was a little girl growing up and all the other little girls in my class wanted to be school teachers and nurses and this and that – I’d always say – “all I wanted to be was a wife, mom and homemaker.” And boy I’ve absolutely had the best job in the world.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these kids … What a storybook life these kids and their dad have given me …
We have a back porch picnic planned for Mother’s Day – I hope you all have a great Mother’s Day too –
Happy Mother’s Day from Round Knob Canyon –
