Making A House A Home....HOW Do We DO That?

Sometimes this busy train of life just starts spinning out of control and runs right off the rails and we just have to take a deep breath and yell..."Ok STOP, STOP, STOP!!!  Let's take a break and re-think what is HAPPENING to our DAYS...They are TOO TOO RUSHED and there has to be time for FUN.

Sunday on the geezer ride...we were invited on a 2-3 week ride on our Valkyrie out West with another couple...and they are

leaving this Friday...part of me wanted to go SO SO bad...but the other part was saying "But there won't be BLUEBERRIES in 2 week...and the corn on the cob will be over by then and I need to get dozens of ears of that in the freezer....and I told Ann Cluck we'd run up to her Day Lillie Farm in Galatia this week...and the geezer is wanting to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway AFTER HE LETS ME SPEND A NIGHT IN OUR SECRET HIDEAWAY IN GATLINBURG AND TAKES ME THRU HALLELUJAH ACRES......ATTENTION GEEZER!!!!!

I woke up this morning to the sound of birds chirping outside our bedroom window...it was barely daylight...So I got up...pushed the button on the ready and waiting coffee pot to turn it on...washed my face with cold water to bring me back to reality...and stepped out on the back porch
to feed my waiting Elite Bird Club...and other critters...

It was so nice out there...Billy has recently mowed and the canyon...thru the valley...past the cottage garden and fire pit...to way back to the Secret Garden... it just looked so manicured and peaceful and serene...and I thought..."Wouldn't it be nice if the whole day could stay this peaceful?"

I absolutely LOVE living in the country.  And we may have to head closer to town before we get much older...but for right now...this house in the canyon is just perfect for us.

There are many things you can say about our home...it's nothing fancy in the least...but the comment we hear the most...is how homey it is......I had a message from a friend on Sunday and she was wanting pointers on how to make her home 'homey'....And I'm going to get back with her on that today...she's sent me pics....so this will be tons of fun....

We've talked before about making our homes warm and fuzzy...and to me ... that's so much more important than homes that are big and fancy.
Billy had on a news program the other night and they were talking about how extravagant homes are getting....Some nowdays are just BEYOND huge....Now WHY would a couple or family want a home like that?  "I" think...just for show...and I'm not into...SHOW.

Mom used to always say..."You need to cut your trees along the fence up at the road so people can see your home"  And I'd say "This home is for US, mom....we couldn't care less...what other people think of it"...

But I've had a couple pm's lately asking specific questions about making homes more warm and inviting.....so let's go back over what we've talked about before ...

IF you want to see what others may see or think about your home....Try this...
Stand outside your front door...in fact....to the end of the sidewalk that leads up to your front door...and just look at the front of your home and your yard and analyze it...."What do 'other people' see and think...when they look at the front of your home?" Does it look neat and tidy...is it appealing to the eye? Are the windows clean and the curtains straight? Is the yard neat and tidy or are there little huddles of toys and mess strewn here and there?

When they step inside your front door...what does the inside of your home say to them? Is it a haven to rest in or total chaos? Are there pillows, rugs, pictures or other things that give it personality or character? Or is it just a room with a little very basic furniture that's just 'there'?

When you walk in the door of your home...does it make you go...."Aaaaaaahhh I LOVE this place!"
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS...start by picking up any clutter....it's better stacked in a closet than in front of the coffee table...and when the clutter is up...what do you see?  Is it warm and inviting NOW?  If not...throw an afghan over the couch...and put some warm throw rugs down and add a vintage table cloth to your coffee table...add a little lamp that stays on all the time for 'ambiance'...Make sure the word LOVE is visible somewhere....OH there are so SO many little things you can do.....

Often...Billy will say..."We have too much 'stuff'...we need to get rid of some of it." But 'what do we throw away? The ruffled curtains that have been up for 4 decades....the quilt on our bed that he and the boys bought to surprise me in the fall of 1974? The old kitchen table that his friend Wally Henson built for us in the 1970's? Our couch...only the 2nd couch we've owned in 44 years...which isn't really comfy...but it looks nice...and he and Kim picked that couch out when she was 12 years old...when we decided it was time to part with the $25 couch we bought in the fall of 1967 when we moved back here from Billys stint in Ft Carson Colorado.....or should I ditch my old Wurlitzer piano daddy bought for me when I was 5 years old...in 1951? Or maybe we could toss a few of the 26 trophy buck mounts that are hanging on our walls that Billy spent hours, days and weeks...stalking before he finally took them....hahaha NOOOOOOOOOOO I don't see a thing we can ditch....because this home is SO SO SO 'us'. And most of it is gonna be here...just like we are....'till death us do part'....hahaha

Sometimes we'll go to visit in this or that home and the home will be so spacious...not a lot of 'stuff' and I feel like I can breath SO SO SO good...hahaha And I'll be setting there thinking....I need to get rid of a lot of 'stuff'...make our home more 'roomy'....then we'll leave the friends homes...and walk in the door of ours and it just wraps its arms around us in a big warm hug and says..."Welcome HOME"! And I think.....'Aaaaaah....THIS 'IS' home...to US!"

There's a sign just as you walk up on our front porch...and it says, "This Place Is The Scrapbook Of Our Lives"....and that is SO SO SO....true...

Well...we're not going to try to change the world today....I had one of the most exhausting and hectic days of my life yesterday....so today I'm just going to clean and tidy...work on blog stuff and grill later....I'm going to try to live today....like many folks live everyday...just kind of a relaxing but busy...summer day....

If these blogs....or even one once in a while....strike a chord with you...I sure wish you'd share them with your own friends....we really DO work hard at these blogs...and now we've added the Songs of Yesteryear....which has been a huge hit and I'm so thankful for that....I'm loving doing the "Songs of Yesteryear"....SO I'd really appreciate you sharing my blog on occasion if you will....

I thought you may like to take a peek at where we stay in Gatlinburg...right smack dab in the middle of downtown...but OH sooooooooo secluded...next door to that huge aquarium ...

And then there's the Smoky Mountain National Park...THIS PARK is why we go to GATLINBURG :-)   We LOVE wading the streams and hiking the trails...absolutely heaven on earth...anyone who could go to this area and then question whether there is a God...should be declared mentally incompetent.....
